Peer Participation in Mental Health

Peer Participation in Mental Health

When people with lived experience in mental health participate in recovery-orientated services and programs, it makes a life-changing difference.

Peer participation is when people with a lived experience in mental health actively participate in the planning, implementation and/or evaluation of mental health services.

Participation can be on a:

  • individual level—interactions about one’s own care and active involvement in decision making
  • service level—where a peer is actively contributes to improving a mental health service or program area
  • organisational level—where peer participation contributes to the strategic direction of an organisation
  • regional level—where peer participation contributes to an active voice on needs in local areas to inform state, national and international policy and reform agendas.
