Community services

Non-government organisations that provide a range of often free or low-cost support services within the community

What is it?

Community services are generally provided by not-for-profit organisations and include education, support and treatment around eating disorders.

If you’re seeking help for an eating disorder for the first time, community services can help you through helplines, counselling, therapeutic and peer support groups, education programs and service navigation.

What can someone expect?

Community services can help identify what services are available and would be best for your situation. They can also help you find and connect with service providers or health professionals.

Community services provide different types and levels of support. For example, Eating Disorders Queensland (EDQ) provides services directly to individuals and groups whereas national organisations like the Butterfly Foundation offer brief phone counselling, online chat, online support groups and programs, and referral assistance to anyone in Australia.

You can usually access support from community services by contacting them directly without a referral.

You may not know your recovery goals yet but community services can assist with navigating what services are available and planning your recovery.

Who is this for?

Community services can help you if you’re concerned you may have an eating disorder and ready to seek help but not sure what treatment options are available to you.

Community services can also be a non-threatening way to learn more about eating disorders and get assistance to find services and support in your area.

How can someone access it?

EDQ is a statewide, not-for-profit organisation funded by Queensland Health to provide community support and treatment services for eating disorders. EDQ has a dedicated Care Navigator who can help anyone looking for assistance to find an appropriate service. This can involve information, referrals and/or arranging an assessment appointment. Contact EDQ by emailing admin@edq.org.au, calling 07 3844 6055 or submitting an online enquiry.

Butterfly Foundation is the national charity for Australians impacted by eating disorders and body image issues. Its National Helpline provides free telephone, online and email counselling.

  • You can call the National Helpline on 1800 33 4673 from 8am to midnight (AEDT) any day or visit the website for online chat.
  • Find other supports offered by Butterfly such as support groups, programs or the referral database.
