Community services are generally provided by not-for-profit organisations and include education, support and treatment tailored for you as a carer, family member or other supporter of someone with an eating disorder.
Eating disorders may have a significant impact on you as a carer or supporter of someone with an eating disorder. Community services offer support groups and educational programs tailored for carers and families.
Support groups can provide a supportive and collaborative environment for family members, carers and key support people to come together. They are generally facilitated by trained counsellors and specialists who are trained in working with eating disorders, as well as people who have lived experience of being a caregiver to someone with an eating disorder.
If you’re caring for or supporting someone you know with an eating disorder, community services can offer you helpful information, build your knowledge and skills, and connect you with others who have a similar experience.
Eating Disorders Queensland (EDQ) provides a range of support programs for carers and key supports of people with eating disorders in Queensland, including carer peer support groups, carer peer mentoring, workshops and coaching sessions.
Butterfly Foundation provides information, online programs and support groups for those caring for someone with an eating disorder.
Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) is a national organisation providing support and education for carers and families impacted by eating disorders. EDFA’s website offers information, seminars, carer stories, support groups and social media forums.
These organisations provide support for carers that is not specific to eating disorders.
