Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have undergone specialist training in diagnosing and treating people with mental illness.

Psychiatrists understand physical and mental health conditions—and how they affect each other.

Psychiatrists can provide a range of treatments including prescribing medication.

They are specialists in supporting people diagnosed with severe and complex mental health conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorders or severe depression.

Psychiatrists work in public and private hospitals, community mental health services and in private consulting rooms.

You need a referral from your GP to see a private psychiatrist and to claim rebates through Medicare.

Your Health in Mind

Developed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, you can search for a psychiatrist, find out how much the service costs and learn about specific mental health conditions and treatments.
